Summer Displays: Sunglasses

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

The sun is out and shining bright. Help your customers protect their peepers and look good while doing it by selling sunglasses.

From top of the line designer specs to drugstore bargain finds, sunglasses are the season’s hot accessory and like purses and shoes, there is no such thing as too many sunglasses.

Shopping for sunglasses is an event. Trying on ridiculous and eye popping sunglasses can provide laughs, cheers and cries of joy. To spotlight sunglasses, there are certain products you should use to display them. Plus, placing them in the right spot is of utmost importance.

Sunglass displays are most often in the form of a rotating display. We recommend counter top displays rather than standalone sunglass displays when using a rotating display. This gives you the opportunity to have a full sized mirror on the counter as well so that your customers get a full view of how the sunglasses look on their face, instead of using a tiny mirror on the top of a standalone display. Plus, putting it on a countertop gives you the ability to display other items in conjunction with sunglasses.

For high end designer sunglasses, we recommend keeping merchandise in a display case. Sunglasses tend to be a common item to steal, so for expensive sunglasses, the added layer of security is a good idea. Plus any time you put something under glass, the perceived value of the item goes up and people will be more willing to pay more.

When displaying in a case, use single eyeglass displays. If you are operating a sunglass cart in a mall or busy area, these work as well because you can easily create different levels of your merchandise on your cart.

If your store has slatwall, consider adding sunglasses next to other summer items, like swimsuits, beach bags and cover-ups. This gives your customers the ability to create an entire look in one area of the store.  And you can add mirrors to slatwall to give your customers a place to check out their new shades.

As for location, we recommend putting sunglass displays near your register counter for two reasons. First, people are waiting in this area to check out and can easily try on sunglasses. This may lead to an impulse buy at the end of their shopping trip.

Secondly, because sunglasses tend to walk, having the merchandise near the counter can deter theft and you can keep an eye on your glasses.

And make sure you play around with what is displayed near your sunglasses. Depending on your store, you can place sun block, lip balm, scarves, headbands, beach bags, swimsuits and more by your sunglasses.

So help your customers look cool in the sun by stocking up on sunglasses this summer.

Summer Displays: Swimsuits

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

This summer, we are going to feature many of the different display items that are perfect for summer merchandise. From swimsuits, to sunglasses and more, summer is a fabulous time for switching up your merchandise and making quick sales with new customers.

First we are going to highlight ways to display swimsuits. Swimsuit season can be a fast season, most people make their suit purchases before the 4th of July. But there is still plenty of time to revamp your displays to maximize your profits in this area.

One of the more difficult items to display, swimsuits don’t have the same type of hanger appeal as shirts or dresses. And because of the limited amount of fabric, even hanging a swimsuit on a hanger can prove to be a challenge. Here are our suggestions for displaying swimsuits.

Use some sort of a display form that can hang on the front of a rack or on wire grid or slat wall displays. These forms allow you to tie a bikini or one piece onto the form so your customers can see exactly how the suit is cut. Then place the inventory of swimsuit sizes on the rack below or behind that display form. Even if your clientele is on the petite side, we recommend using a more shapely display form because it keeps the cups of the bikinis in the right place.

Two piece hangers work well for two piece suits that are sold as a set. Or take a standard plastic dress hanger and hang a pant hanger from the loop at the bottom of the dress hanger. This gives you the ability to keep separates together but you can show off each piece individually.

Many times for sizing and style purposes, suits are sold in a mix and match display. One of the best ways to do this is to create a slatwall display. You can then add faceouts at two levels, placing all the top options above and the bottoms below. And make sure to display many different options of the combinations using the forms that can be placed high on the slatwall.

How does your store display your swimsuits?

This Week’s Poll Topic: New Videos

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Last week’s poll made it clear that you want to see how to articles/videos and design ideas in this space.

We are going to be developing a series of how to videos and want your feedback about specific videos you would like to see. Because the Store Supply Blog is designed to be a place that directly addresses your questions, we want you to help us decide which topics we should cover in these videos.

Some ideas we have include many of the design pieces that we carry in our product lines, like racks, wall displays (such as slatwall and wire grid), window displays, outdoor sales displays, mannequins and other clothing displays and more. We are going to develop videos that help you maximize these items to create vibrant sale areas.

In the poll to the right, we are asking which display items you want to be featured in a how to video. So please vote and let us know what you want to see most.

And, if there is any other how to or design video that you want to see specifically, leave a comment and we will do our best to add it to our list of videos and articles.

As always, if you have any other ideas for articles, please let us know!

Your Ideas for Successful Summer Sales

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

With Memorial Day and other summer sales quickly approaching, we wanted to spotlight some summer sales techniques. And because one of our best resources is you, we wanted to ask you what has worked best in the past when promoting and implementing summer sales.

Memorial Day is the time to pull out the summer patio sets, hats, sunglasses, margarita sets and more. It is the official start to summer and people are ready to stock up on the essentials. Also don’t forget that the summer wedding season is kicking into full gear, so wedding gifts that are properly displayed and priced can start to fly off your shelves.

Because of the three day weekend, you have an extra opportunity to reach consumers to get them shopping. So take advantage by using eye catching signs, sidewalk sale techniques and sales that are sure to get people in your door.

We want to open this one up to you, the retailer. What has worked for you in the past when it comes to summer sales?

Is there a certain sign or display idea that produced better results than others?

And also, what didn’t work for you?

Please let us and other retailers know so that everyone can have a prosperous summer sale season. Leave your comments and suggestions.
